Privacy Policy
Effective: May 27, 2026
TL;DR
Notchkin runs entirely on your Mac. Your data never leaves it. There are no servers, no accounts, no analytics, and no third-party trackers.
Data Notchkin collects
None. Notchkin has no server, no backend, and no telemetry. Because the app is local-only by design, there is nowhere for data to be sent, even by accident.
Notchkin does not use accounts, analytics, crash reporters, ads, or third-party tracking SDKs (like Google Analytics, Firebase, or Mixpanel). Your notes are entirely your business.
Data stored on your Mac
Notchkin saves your notes, settings, and 7 rolling daily backups to a secure, sandboxed folder on your Mac. macOS's App Sandbox prevents other apps from reading or modifying that folder. Your data never leaves your Mac.
Those in-app backups protect against accidental edits and corruption, but they live on the same Mac as your notes – they will not help if the Mac itself dies. For that, back the Mac up with Time Machine, iCloud Drive, or any tool you control.
When Notchkin uses the network
The app itself does not make network requests. Your Mac only talks to the internet through Notchkin when you explicitly do something that requires it:
- Clicking a link: If you click a URL in a note, Notchkin hands it off to your default web browser. The browser handles the rest.
- Sending feedback: Clicking "Send Feedback" opens your default mail client with a draft addressed to whine@notchkin.app. Your mail client handles the delivery.
- App Store updates: macOS checks for and downloads updates automatically. This is handled entirely by Apple, just like any other Mac App Store app.
Permissions Notchkin requests
- Accessibility (optional): Requested only if you set a global keyboard shortcut. macOS requires this permission for any app to receive key presses while another app is in the foreground. If you skip this, Notchkin still works perfectly – just without the global hotkey.
- File access (on-demand): Requested only when you use the Import or Export menu items, and access is strictly limited to the specific file or folder you select in the system file picker.
Children's privacy
Notchkin does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. We do not knowingly collect any data from anyone under 13, because we do not collect any data at all.
Changes to this policy
If Notchkin ever changes in a way that affects this policy – for example, if a future version adds an opt-in iCloud sync feature – this page will be updated and the "Effective" date above will change. Material changes will also be noted in the in-app release notes.
