Privacy Policy

Data Notchkin collects

Nothing reaches the developer, ever. Notchkin has no server, no backend and no analytics, so there is nowhere for your notes to be sent, even by accident.

The Setapp version includes a framework that tells the Setapp app on your Mac that Notchkin was opened, which is how Setapp knows the app is being used and how developers get paid. It carries none of your notes and no information about them, and it is covered by Setapp’s own privacy notice. The Mac App Store version does not include the framework at all.

Data stored on your Mac

Notchkin saves your notes, settings, and 7 rolling daily backups to a secure, sandboxed folder on your Mac. macOS's App Sandbox prevents other apps from reading or modifying that folder. Your data never leaves your Mac.

Those daily backups cover a corrupted file, or notes you deleted and want back – import one and anything missing comes home, though it will not overwrite a note you still have. Either way they live on the same Mac as your notes, so they will not help if the Mac itself dies. For that, back the Mac up with Time Machine, iCloud Drive, or any tool you control.

When Notchkin uses the network

The app itself does not make network requests. Your Mac only talks to the internet through Notchkin when you explicitly do something that requires it:

• Clicking a link: If you click a URL in a note, Notchkin hands it off to your default web browser. The browser handles the rest.
• Sending feedback: Clicking "Send Feedback" opens your default mail client with a draft addressed to whine@notchkin.app. Your mail client handles the delivery.
• App updates: If you installed Notchkin from the Mac App Store, macOS checks for and downloads updates automatically, handled by Apple like any other Mac App Store app. If you installed it through Setapp, updates arrive through the Setapp app instead. Either way, the update is delivered by the store you got Notchkin from, not by a Notchkin server, because there is no Notchkin server.

Permissions Notchkin requests

• Accessibility (optional): Only for the global keyboard shortcuts – macOS will not hand key presses to an app sitting in the background without it. Notchkin ships with three shortcuts already set, so Settings will ask for Accessibility even if you never picked one yourself. Nothing prompts you and nothing nags. Skip it and you lose those three shortcuts, and nothing else.
• File access (on-demand): Requested only when you use the Import or Export menu items, and access is strictly limited to the specific file or folder you select in the system file picker.

Children's privacy

Notchkin does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. It does not knowingly collect any data from anyone under 13, because it does not collect any data at all.

Changes to this policy

If Notchkin ever changes in a way that affects this policy, this page will be updated and the "Effective" date above will change. Material changes will also be noted in the in-app release notes.
